Earth Medicine: Foundation in Herbal Medicine

LEVEL 2

Deepening into Land, Lineage, Kin Medicine, and Reciprocity

Earth Medicine Level 2:

One Year Deep Foundation Course in Herbal Medicine

Earth Medicine Level 2 is designed for folk who would like to deepen their herbal practice without or before undertaking a professional training, this course will strengthen the foundations of herbalism that you may already have built. Level 2 focuses on medicine making as a lived, relational process, rooted in land, informed by lineage and shaped by responsibility and reciprocity.

The course weaves hands on more complex medicine making with critical ecological and social awareness, supporting attunement with herbalism as situated within place, history, and power. We learn more of the stories of our plant kin and deepen our personal and hopefully collective relationships with these plants. This is a space for those who want to tend their herbalism in ways which honour relationship within the living systems of which we are all a part.

Throughout the course, we deepen personal and collective relationships with our plant kin through observation, making, reflection and shared learning. Attention is given to ethics, consent and care in how medicine is gathered, prepared and shared, alongside an exploration of therapeutics that honours both embodied experience and ecological context. This is a space for those who wish to tend their herbalism in ways that remain responsive to the living systems of which we are a part.

We journey through the year together, working seasonally and noticing and experiencing the wild, elements, cycles and shifts in the land and in ourselves. As our practice deepens, we also consider the wider environmental and social conditions that shape access to land, health and medicine, holding herbalism embedded within broader webs of relationship, responsibility and care.

Earth Medicine Level 2 is designed for folk who would like to deepen their herbal practice without or before undertaking professional training. The course strengthens the foundations of herbalism you may have begun building, offering a year long space to drop into, practise and root more fully into relationship with plants, land and medicine.

Held in the calm embrace of a beautiful place in Stroud, we will learn together, eat together and connect together and with beautiful plant medicines from the local area and further afield.

This course is supported by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) as a deep foundation level in Herbal Medicine

Getting Here

The centre is beautifully structured with gentle curves and soft furnishings to make us feel held as we explore our herbal journey together. It is a 5-10 minute walk from Stroud (Gloucs) train station and there is also parking onsite for those driving.

Stroud is a beautiful mix of a town with artists, textilers, eco folk and all and any nestled in between hills where five valleys emanate outwards and each hill and valley holds a charm of its own. The therapy centre is just beside the Painswick Stream and has a lovely small lake at the base of the gardens.

There are plenty of lovely airbnb type affairs and B&Bs, hotels, inns etc. around the area. There are also a few campsites if you’d prefer to camp and coming from afar. If you need help with where to stay do be in touch.

Guest Teachers

Alice Nugent MNIMH MCPP

Alice is a Medical Herbalist with a passion for working with people to improve health and wellbeing. Alice began practising in 2009 and is further qualified in Traditional Medical Practice (University of Zimbabwe), and Neurodiversity Specialist Coaching, she was previously trained in complementary therapies and has worked health practice for 30 years. She has an initiative in southern Africa supporting women grow herbs for health.

‘I truly believe food and plants are our medicine as I spent my early years foraging and working on the land in my home in Furancungo in Mozambique. I moved to the UK in 1997 and I practice from my home in Marlow. As an extension of my herbal medicine practice, in 2013 I established a company, Hippopot Herbs. Hippopot herbal teas were inspired by watching hippos drinking water by the banks of the mighty Zambezi River.

I strongly believe in supporting others and giving back to the community. I started a charity called Malawi Smiles in 2014, the focus is on empowering girls to stay in education. I and several volunteers run an annual summer camp during which we cover life skills and build self-esteem.

I am looking forward to sharing with festival participants more about my background and traditional herbal medicine in southern Africa.’

Alice has run her clinical practice, workshops and courses over the last 16 years and we are lucky enough to have Alice sharing her teachings and traditional practices from Mozambique and Zimbabwe during each weekend gathering.
